What's Inside: Holbein Botanical Art Set

Hazel Scott

Yuko Nagayama's "You Can Paint Vibrant Watercolors in Twelve Easy Lessons" was my very first watercolor book and I picked it up thinking the lessons would be doable with any watercolor set. The art books I owned at the time, mostly about drawing, all start with recommended supplies but very few would name particular brands, and so I didn't expect it would matter so much with following Yuko's lessons. All I had was a Winsor and Newton Cotman Sketcher's Pocket Box and I set off with the apple exercise, all eager and optimistic.

As you can probably predict from the gist of my first paragraph, I was wrong. I have written a review of the book in another post, but long story short, I decided to reduce my variables by purchasing a Holbein watercolor set. I'd previously heard many great things about Holbein and the set that seemed most sensible was the Botanical Art Set, which I got from ArtWhale.ph for Php 2,500.

Because I really only use it to follow tutorials from artists who use Holbein, I'm destashing them in my filled palettes, available from my Shop here. Don't get me wrong, Holbein is amazing, but right now, I am doing Anna Mason exercises and she references Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith, and I'm scared my Holbein will just dry up before I use them all up. If you have books from Yuko Nagayama and want to focus on following her technique, an idea is to just get Holbein and get those color decisions out of the way ;-)

The box set contains 24 colors in 5 mL tubes.
